Last week while I was on Facebook, a lady who owns an ecommerce business shared a link to one of her products on her store. Immediately I clicked on the link, I landed on the product page. I stayed for a bit and then closed my browser.

I almost forgot about the site.

But, can you guess the first advert I saw once I opened my Instagram page? The same product that this lady shared the link.

I opened Facebook, scrolled down a bit, I saw the advert again.

Can you see where I am going?

This lady has done the right thing. She is following me everywhere I go until I buy the product that I saw on her page.

How is she doing this?

It is called, “Retargeting”

So many ecommerce store owners miss this.

Now, imagine if 100 people landed on her page as I did. This means this advert will keep following them across different platforms until a percentage of them finally buy the product.

This is the new level of advertising magic that your ecommerce business should be using. And it cost way less than you think.

So many ecommerce owners are putting themselves out of business by not doing this type of advertising. It has been said times without numbers that people need to see your product more than once to be able to make a buying decision very quickly.

This is why as an ecommerce business owner you have to do everything within your power to make sure your product is constantly in front of the eyes of your target audience.

If you have not tried retargeting, this is the time to do so to boost sales for your ecommerce business.

Why Is Retargeting Important?

  • To Bring Back Potential Buyers:

Retargeting is one best way to bring visitors who didn’t buy at their first visit back to your site to make a buying decision. A study revealed that 72% of online shoppers do abandon their cart, but with retargeting, you can get these people to complete their purchase.

  • Brand Awareness:

It is a great way to raise brand awareness in the digital space.

  • For Upselling:

You can use retargeting for your ecommerce store to upsell a product to visitors who have bought before but checked another product page before leaving your site.

How to Use Retargeting for your Ecommerce Store?

Facebook Pixel

Facebook pixel is a code that you place on your site to help measure how your Facebook advert is converting. This analytical tool tracks your site visitors and tells you their actions while on your site.

So, the first thing you will need to do is to install Facebook pixel on every page of your site. With this, you can be able to run multiple retargeting ads for each page and get better results.

How to get started?

Just log into your Facebook account, go to your Facebook Ad Manager, click on ‘Tools’ and click on ‘Pixels’.

A new page will open requesting you to create a pixel.

Enter a name for your Facebook Pixel, tick the box below and click on “Create Pixel”.

Viola, your Facebook Pixel is ready.

Now, if you know you don’t know your way around installing the code on your site, please outsource it to an expert. Don’t try to do it yourself so you don’t spoil the coding of your site.

But, if you know you can do it, just click on ‘Install Pixel Now’ and Facebook will display the pixel code that you will need to install on your site.

To check if the expert did the job correctly or if the pixel has been successfully installed, you can use Pixel Helper Plugin for Chrome to see if the Pixel was installed successfully.

Now, after this is done, the next thing to do is to create a custom audience for your retargeting campaign. To do that, go to your Facebook Ad Manager. On your dashboard, click ‘Tools’ and click ‘Audiences’.

From the option, select ‘Create a Custom Audience’.

how to create a custom audience

Custom Audience is the people you want to only see your ad. This will be the only people your ad will be focused on.

After you must have done that, a new page will open with options for you to choose from. Choose ‘Website Traffic’.

If you want to run a retargeting ad to remind people who visited your product page about the product they saw, you just select, ‘People who visit specific website’.

Now, the period your retargeting campaign will run will depend on you and your budget. But, from my experience with handling different jobs from clients, 7 – 10 days is enough.

Once you are done filling every box, click on ‘Create Audience’ to finish creating your custom audience campaign.
